Why IB?
Thank you for your interest in Oakland High School's International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. The IB program is funded by Rutherford County Schools and ALL qualifying students in Rutherford County are encouraged to apply. Interested students are advised to apply to the IB program in the spring of their 8th grade year in order to take part in the OHS IB Preparatory courses during the freshman and sophomore years. If a student must transfer during any given school year, the student and family must speak directly with Ms. Borombozin to ensure that all requirements are met prior to any consideration of transfer.
Frequently Asked Questions
When are applications due?
The priority application deadline is February 15, 2019. The final application deadline is March 15, 2019.
What is the difference between the priority application deadline and the final application deadline?
Students who complete applications by February 15th will receive letters with their admission decision by March 1st, in time for them to attend the correct freshman orientation night (whether at OHS or otherwise). Students who complete applications by March 15th will receive letters by April 1st; however, they will not hear in time for freshman orientation night and will need to attend orientation at their zoned school.
I am interested in learning more about the IB program. How can I do that?
We hope you will explore our OHS IB website (oaklandib.weebly.com) and the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) website (ibo.org) for more information about the IB Diploma Program. In addition, view the presentation from our annual IB Information Night here.
Can I start the electronic application and then finish later?
Yes! Students may begin their application and at any time may press the "save" button to email themselves a link which will allow them to continue the application at another time.
Do I need to get a zone waiver?
If you are already zoned for Oakland High School, a zone waiver will not be needed. However, if you are zoned for another RCS high school, you will need to apply for a zone waiver. You will not be able to apply for a zone waiver until you have received an acceptance letter. The zone exemption form is available here. Please note, you need to include your acceptance letter when you submit the zone exemption to central office.
How does the zone waiver process work?
Once you have received an acceptance letter, you will print off the IB Zone Waiver (which will be posted to this website in February). Bring the zone waiver and your acceptance letter to both the zoned high school's principal as well as our OHS principal, Mr. Marshall to obtain signatures. Then submit the zone waiver and acceptance letter to RCS central office. The zone waiver will not be approved without an attached acceptance letter, so do not lose your acceptance letter!
When will I find out if I am accepted?
Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis. Although students may hear earlier, applications completed by February 15th will hear no later than March 1st. Applications completed by March 15th will hear no later than April 1st. As soon as a decision is made, you will be notified by mail to the address you provided on the application.
Can my 8th grade student shadow a current OHS IB student for a half day?
Shadowing (students following and IB student in a schedule) will be available from December through February. Please email me at borombozina@rcschools.net. We look forward to seeing your student in the Fall! Please fill out the shadowing form here.
